The mint condition stuff is really expensive, but things with imperfections can be half the price of an equivalent piece from Ikea while be a heck of a lot sturdier. I like to categorize the imperfections as adding character. (Our house is 105 years old with original wood trim, so it has a lot of character of its own. The furniture blends well.) I do hope to someday refinish the pieces we've collected whenever I have the free time, perhaps when the kids go to college. (My oldest is 3, so I have a while.)
One other good way to deal with small scratches in furniture - Macadamia nuts. The fresher the better. Just cut it open (particularly if using something bought at a grocery store. Rub the nut over the scratch. The oils in the nut will bring back some of the natural wood finish to the scratch. This is also best done if you can get to the scratch quickly.
I really liked how you gave the different ways to repair badly damaged furniture pieces, but what I liked the most was the cracks and holes and how I can just use my fingers to fill them with mud.
